Aird, Catherine.              A Going Concern

Pan 0-330-33038-1 1994, 1st thus. (Mass market paperback) ... Very good. ... Reading crease. ... Intricate, witty and thoroughly delightful, Aird's case for Chief Inspector C. D. Sloan and Constable Crosby probes a death with roots in WW II biochemical research. Eccentric, elderly Octavia Garamond has left a will directing that the police be present at her funeral and that her doctor examine her body very closely after her death. These odd requests perplex those involved, notably the deceased's only known survivor, Amelia Kennerly, who is named her great-aunt's sole executor. Further questions are raised when Octavia's home at the Grange, Grand Primer, Calleshire, is thoroughly tossed right after her death; when the local parson expresses some reluctance to preside at the funeral; and when two chemical companies engaged in a takeover battle seem somehow connected to Garamond's demise, which is eventually attributed to a poison worthy of Agatha Christie. As Sloan tracks a money angle, Amelia traces a child born out of wedlock in 1940. In the end, these and related mysteries are handsomely resolved and Aunt Octavia turns out to have been mad only "north-north-west" and fully capable of knowing "a hawk from a handsaw" right unto her end. Peopled with a cast that aptly and frequently quotes Shakespeare, this tale is a literate, surprising treat. ... Pseudonym of Kinn Hamilton McIntosh.

Block, Lawrence.              The Specialists

Foul Play Press 0-88150-043-7 1985, 1st thus. (Mass market paperback) ... Very good. ... The colonel was right. You had to draw a line through mankind, a wavy line but a line, and on one side you had Good and on the other side you had Evil. There was good and bad in everyone, sure, and every shitheel was some mother's son, and it was all well and good to know this, but when push came to shove, it was just words; there was Good and Evil with no shades of gray and Judgment Day came seven time a week." Meet the Specialists, five good men, Manso and Murdock and Simmons and Giordano and Dehn. They scattered when they took off their green berets and returned to civilian life, but now and then their colonel picks up the phone and gets in touch--and they get together to do as they did in Vietnam. Colonel Roger Elliott Cross left a leg in Vietnam. His men came home physically intact, but each bears scars nonetheless. But when they come together, teamed up to right wrongs, they are a powerful force for good. And,by doing good, they also manage to do well. Because when five specialists take on a Mafia-owned bank, why shouldn't they turn profit on the deal? If you saw the A-Team on television, this may seem familiar to you. When Lawrence Block saw the A-Team, it seems uncannily familiar to him, and he had the feeling the show's producers had read his 1968 novel. But he decided, wisely or not, that life is too short for litigation. Now, years later, the TV show has vanished and the book lives on.

Not a book club edition: stated first edition, with original price on the unclipped jacket flap. ... Set in the Victorian era, Brent's enjoyable ninth romantic suspense novel combines a dauntless heroine with a generous serving of adventure and a dollop of amorous intrigue. The Australian outback is a bone-dry wilderness to those unaccustomed to its relentless hardship. Luke Bowman would have died there when his crooked partner left him wounded had it not been for the ministrations of an English girl brought up among Aborigines. In gratitude, he takes her to his farm near Perth, where his invalid wife, Rosemary, welcomes the red-haired half-savage, whom they christen Meg. Unbeknownst to all but an implacable, greedy enemy, she is the heiress to a fortune. When an attempt on her life is followed by Rosemary's death and Luke's heartbroken defection, Meg is deposited at a stuffy Swiss finishing school. Yet danger threatens even there, and in the company of several appealing companions she embarks on a pilgrimage through the polite drawing rooms of Victorian England, across the decks of a well-appointed yacht and along an unbeaten desert trail, in search of safe harbor. ... Chesterton, G. K.              The Man Who Was Thursday

Penguin Modern Classics 0-14-000095-X 1972, reprint. (Mass market paperback) ... Very good. ... In an article published the day before his death, G.K. Chesterton called the Man Who Was Thursday "a very melodramatic sort of moonshine." Set in a phantasmagoric London where policemen are poets and anarchists camouflage themselves as, well, anarchists, his 1907 novel offers up one highly colored enigma after another. If that weren't enough, the author also throws in an elephant chase and a hot-air-balloon pursuit in which the pursuers suffer from "the persistent refusal of the balloon to follow the roads, and the still more persistent refusal of the cabmen to follow the balloon.".

Clarke, Anna.              My Search for Ruth

Charter 1-55773-193-4 1989, 1st thus. (Mass market paperback) ... Very good. ... This is a reissue of one of the prolific British author's mysteries, first published in England in 1973. Clarke's narrator, Ruth, relives her haunted growing years and the torments she felt because no one would tell her the truth about her missing mother, also called Ruth. The orphan runs away from guardians and lies to a man she meets, telling him she's a student at St. Margaret's, where professor West escorts her. The headmistress, Miss Murry, who knew Ruth's mother when she was a student there, allows the girl to stay and becomes her foster mother, asking Ruth to call her Nan. Bit by bit, Ruth inveigles information from Nan, which is revealed to be false in the mystery's shocking finale. During succeeding events, hints about strange relationshipsbetween West and Miss Murry, between the girl and everyone elseare introduced as side issues that eventually prove meaningless, and irksome to boot. But a more serious failing lies in the character of the heroine; she is querulous, unkind, thankless and self-dramatizing. While the natural inclination is to sympathize with the orphan, readers may instead feel for Ruth's generous benefactors.

Clarke, Anna.              The Mystery Lady

Charter 1-55773-286-8 1989, 1st thus. (Mass market paperback) ... Very good. ... Professor Paula Glenning has just published a bestselling biography of a famous contemporary writer when her publisher George Bruce suggests she next tackle the life of another author. Rosie O'Grady's popular novels and reclusive habits have earned her the title of the Mystery Lady, and even Bruce, who publishes her books, knows little about her. With some reluctance, Paula begins her research with the aid of fellow teacher James Goff, following leads out of London to Brighton and the countryside where they come up square against the Mystery Lady's stony and secretive personal secretary, Robin Key, who turns out to be an old partner of Bruce's, and another writer whose existence is also a mystery worth killing for. Clarke is a veteran Crime Club contributor (Cabin 3033 and Soon She Must Die, with skills and experience shown here in able plotting and the quick, sure strokes with which she gives her characters life beyond the boundaries of the mystery that connects them.
